Volunteer Centre Befriending Service befriending service

Volunteer Centre Sunderland requires volunteers to support their Befriending Service across the city including Washington, Houghton and Hetton. As a befriender volunteers are required to visit older and disabled people in their own homes, a few hours each week giving them companionship and if required escort them on shopping trips, walks etc. No previous experience is required but volunteers would need to be aged 16 plus, undergo a CRB check and be friendly, reliable and kind. This would be a good experience for anyone thinking of going into a caring profession with a few hours to spare each week. All out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed

Volunteer Centre Driving Service volunteer driving service

Volunteer Drivers are wanted to transport older people to and from hospital appointments, church visits, health centre and social calls etc using their own cars. Volunteer drivers must be in good health, have a fully comprehensive insurance, a clean driving licence, aged over 22years old and at least 5 years driving experience, undergo a CRB check and enjoy working with older people. All out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

SAINSBURY’S UK SCHOOL GAMES

A big thank you goes to all those who have already committed their time to help volunteer at this year’s Sainsbury’s UK School Games from the 2nd – 5th September.  The UK School Games is a legacy of the London 2012 Olympics and sees around 1600 of the best young sporting talent from across Great Britain competing in what is rapidly becoming one of the major events in the UK sporting calendar.

10 sports are competed in across Tyne and Wear with Sunderland hosting swimming, table tennis and fencing.

There are still a number of exciting volunteering opportunities available to get involved in the Games.

Media Assistant:

Your role will be to help the media manager develop potential news stories from the athletes, to upload pictures, send Twitter and Facebook messages, and assist with the management of the Media Centre ensuring all media attendees are registered and have all event information. Ideally volunteers for this role should be currently studying a journalism course or are of a media background, however this is not essential.

Drivers

This is a key role for the games.  We’re looking for people who have expert local knowledge of driving around Sunderland, Gateshead and Newcastle and are good at communicating with people on a personal level.  Drivers are required for the duration of the event to work with the assigned transport company. Volunteers must be over the ages of 25 years and have a full clean driving license.

Your role will see you transport VIPs such as Olympic silver medallist Darren Campbell, event staff, welfare officers, officials and others associated with the UK School Games between competition venues, hotels and transport stations.  You will drive either one of the competitions Mini-buses or fleet cars.

Venue Specific Volunteers

If you have a passion for one of the ten sports or fancy getting to know a new sport then this role is for you.  You will support one of the 10 sports to ensure the event runs smoothly.  The role will see you take up a number of roles including ticket and programme selling, accreditation of athletes and coaches, medal ceremonies spectator services and court side assistant.  This role is right at the heart of the Games and is a great way to experience the whole feel of an international sporting event.

Volunteers do not have to commit themselves to attend all 4 days but ideally should be available to commit to two days to help create a strong team atmosphere and work ethic.   When completing the application you can tick which days and times you are available to volunteer.

All volunteers will get free UK School Games Adidas kit to the value of £100, will be invited to a post games volunteers awards and celebration night at the Baltic and have a fantastic experience in one of the premier sporting events in the UK.

If you feel that you would like to get involved please contact the Volunteer Centre by Tuesday 29th June to request an application form.

Cancer Research UK - BUPA Great North Run 10K

On Sunday 18th July nearly 100 runners will be pounding the pavements of Sunderland to raise money for Cancer Research UK.  they need your help to cheer the runners on - this is a chance to show your support without having to run a mile!  It's very simple but the presence of supporters like you makes for a great atmosphere, reminding the runners how much their effort is really appreciated.

Your responsibility will be to stand on the sidelines from 9.45am - 12.30pm and cheer on the runners.  Volunteers will be provided with a Cancer Research UK volunteer t-shirt (and a water proof poncho if it's raining) and all the cheering and noise makers you could need.

The race starts on Wearmouth Bridge and ends at the Stadium of Light.

Hendon Young Peoples Project (HYPP) aims to help and educate children and young people through their leisure-time activities and to nurture and develop young people's physical, mental, spiritual capacities and well being, in order that they may grow to full maturity as individuals, and members of society, so their conditions in life may be improved. HYPP also provides information and support to young people on issues that effect their everyday life, such as drug and alcohol misuse, education and training, housing, health/sexual health and other issues that are relevant to young people and their local community.

They are currently recruiting for a Volunteer Youth Worker. Under the direction and supervision of the Senior Youth Worker, volunteers will develop positive relationships with children. Volunteers will also be encouraged to meet young people's social, educational and recreational needs within the context of Hendon Young Peoples' Project, and will develop children's participation and decision-making skills, thus enabling them to make choices and take responsibility for their actions. Volunteers will help provide a programme of activities, services and facilities and ensure they take place in a safe environment and in accordance with Health & Safety Rules and Regulations. This Project operates from 4.45pm till 7.15pm on Tuesdays, 5.45pm till 8.15pm on Wednesdays and 6.15pm till 8.45pm on Thursdays. Volunteers need to be aware of current issues concerning children and be patient, considerate, non judgemental and tolerant. They will need good communication skills have a friendly manner and be a good role model. Enthusiasm is essential, together with an appreciation of the need for confidentiality in response to the users of the project.

City of Sunderland Council – ‘Wellness Service in the City’ aims to improve individuals health and wellbeing through the provision of physical activity opportunities, lifestyle advice and education ensuring there are a range of preventative services, targeted interventions and specialist support services available at a local level.

The walking programme is encouraging individuals to walk to improve their health. The walks will be targeted at the 'non active' to encourage them to increase their activity levels.

They are currently looking for volunteer Walk Leaders who will deliver led walks as part of the 'Wellness ......It's a Walk in the Park' Programme and potentially further walks once the walking programmes are further developed. Occasionally, the volunteer will be involved in planning and risk assessment of new walks. Walks will be held at times to suit the volunteer.

Volunteers aged 18+ should be good communicators with an interest and enthusiasm for walking and the ability to encourage and motivate individuals to participate in the walking programme. Volunteer Walk Leader Training and First Aid Training will be provided free of charge.

Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust raises awareness of wetlands importance.

At present they are currently recruiting volunteer Flamingo Spies. As the flamingo breeding season approaches, the trust is eager to record the display dances, mating behaviour and individual interactions of their flamingo flock. Volunteers will work with, and be trained by, the aviculture manager, and be provided with ethogram charts and binoculars to record flamingo behaviour and interaction with other species e.g. crested ducks and gulls. Seats will be provided and a thermos of tea/coffee.

Volunteers need to watch the flamingos for periods of up to two hours. Observations for shorter time-periods would be of great value also. As the flamingos are warming up for the breeding season, ideally, we can monitor the flock between 9.30am and 5pm each day.

Volunteers interested in this opportunity should have an interest in nature conservation, patience, attention to detail and the ability to interact with visitors, explaining your actions and why they are undertaken. Reliability is essential
