Volunteering in Sunderland – Recognising and rewarding volunteers for their role in delivering services and improving the lives of people in the City
A little time makes a big difference…
Volunteering is defined as any form of unpaid service, such as providing support to an organisation, providing befriending and mentoring services, organising sports and physical recreation for social benefit, acting as a trustee or member of a voluntary organisation, contributing to a voluntary initiative, as well as campaigning to identify and tackle unmet social needs.
Volunteers can do almost anything - from helping an older person with their shopping, cleaning up beaches, junior league football management, helping out with after school activities, community policing or providing support to local organisations.
Volunteering contributes to the development of shared knowledge and understanding.
In recognition of the valued contribution made by volunteers to the City there will be 5 volunteer events held in each area of the city, during week commencing 22nd February 2010, to celebrate those who give their time freely for the benefit of others and their local community.
The area volunteer events are aimed at raising the profile of volunteering as well as recognising the contribution made by volunteers to the five strategic aims of the City developed by the Sunderland Partnership.
Following the area events volunteers can be nominated for awards by organisations that use volunteers or anyone who benefits from the support of a volunteer.
Nominees will be selected by the Area Chair and Vice Chair of each of the 5 area VCS networks to attend a celebration event dinner hosted by the Mayor of Sunderland to celebrate volunteering achievements.
If you volunteer, or use volunteers in your organisation and would like to participate in the celebrations to recognise your contribution please contact:
