Nightstop North East helps young people who are in immediate housing crisis by providing safe accommodation in the homes of volunteers called "hosts." Initially for one night, we also help young people to look at their longer term housing options with the help of an experienced project worker.

They currently require volunteers in the Sunderland area to help out in two different roles.

The first is a volunteer host who will provide a room in their home for a homeless young person to stay in overnight as a safe alternative to sleeping on the streets. They will also provide breakfast and an evening meal. Volunteers will liaise with the Project Team on a regular basis and attend periodic reviews and training.  To become a volunteers for this role you should have a basic understanding of young peoples issues with an ability to relate to young people on a one to one, non judgmental basis. You will also need a spare room available for young propel referred by the Scheme at short notice. Volunteers will be prepared to participate in training when required.

The second is volunteer drivers who will provide transport for the young people using the service to enable them to access the accommodation.  The driver will meet the young person at a pre arranged meeting point and on arrival at the host's home, introduce the young person to their host.

Volunteers for this role will require a full current driving licence with permission to drive motor vehicles in the UK, the use of a mobile telephone during volunteering hours, the ability to relate to young people on a one to one, non judgmental basis and the time to spare up to two evenings per week.

Wanted – Passionate people to help Victim Support with new initiative! Victim Support logo

Most people are aware of Victim Support, but ask someone what we do and you will often meet blank looks. People often don’t know we are a charity who needs vital funds to support a range of services that positively impact communities throughout the country. We are therefore looking for volunteers to help us to increase local knowledge and raise those much needed funds.

These new volunteers will assist us in reaching into communities by helping us to shape our fundraising focus. We need motivated, enthusiastic and fun people who can help us take our ideas and grow them into community events, therefore bringing in the support and awareness we require. We need people who have a passion for making a difference, can be very well organised, are articulate and can be innovative in their approach. If this sounds like you – you can help us to create and organise a calendar of events, be an ambassador by engaging with community groups, create e-letters and other marketing material that shout’s about what we do and inevitably help us to sustain, enhance and grow a service that supports on average 1.5 million victims and witnesses of crime per year.

Volunteers wanted to light up wall

WEARSIDERS have the chance to help light up Hadrian's Wall.

Organisers are looking for 500 people to help create the lights, which will stretch from one side of Britain to the other.

Each of the volunteer illuminators will be part of a small team responsible for lighting one of the 500 individual points of light that will be placed at 250m intervals along the route of the 84-mile long Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail on March 13.

The first of the lights will be illuminated at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend, North Tyneside, and each of the other lights will then be lit in sequence with the line of light reaching Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast about an hour later.

Cruelty to children must stop. FULL STOP. NSPCC

The NSPCC require volunteers to help with fundraising days at B & Q stores across Sunderland and Washington on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th April. Volunteers will be required to stand at the entrance with an NSPCC collecting bucket and smile brightly at shoppers for an hour, or however long you can give, collecting donations from shoppers and handing out stickers to those who donate.  Just an hour of your time could raise a considerable amount of vital funding for the NSPCC and our services such as ChildLine, where it costs us £4 to answer a call from a worried child.  1 in 3 calls is going unanswered because we lack funding – please give up just an hour or more of your time to help us be there for more children.

(B&Q at Deptford, Sunderland, B&Q at Ryhope Road, Sunderland, B&Q at Armstrong Industrial Estate, Washington)
