November 2009 Newsletter
International Volunteers Day - 5th December 2009 How will you celebrate the day? International Volunteers Day is a day that marks the contribution of volunteers to various causes and communities around the world and provides the perfect opportuity for local volunteer involving organisations to celebrate the support their volunteers give. It is estimated that the economice value of the work done by the volunteer workforce in Sunderland is in excess £12million annually. Therefore marking such a day is especially important as a way of saying thank you to these volunteers and showing just howmuch their work is appreciated. Research has also shown that one of the main reasons that many volunteers leave their volunteering early, isn't because they don't enjoy what they are doing or don't want to help any more but is due to lack of recognition and thanks they recieve. This emphasises the importance of making your volunteers feel valued, involved and appreciated. Other ways you could also reward and recognise your volunteers might include

For those of you who are unsure or unaware of the implications the new Vetting and Barring Scheme will have on your organisation, staff and volunteers, this is the FREE event for you.
The new Vetting and Barring Scheme is one of the Government’s key responses to the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman by Ian Huntley, which focused public attention on the way that the Government vet people who work with children. The resulting Bichard Inquiry recommended a new scheme under which everyone working with children or vulnerable adults should be checked and registered.
Anyone wanting to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults will be required to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) by law. Employers will also be legally bound to check and confirm that the person they have engaged in ‘regulated’ activity is registered and has therefore been checked.
To book a place at the event please complete the BOOKING FORM and return it to sunderlandvol@aol.com no later than 12 noon on Wednesday 9th December.
Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment and should you have any queries or wish to find out event times, please do not hesitate to contact Sharon Charlton at the Volunteer Centre (0191) 5678902. Sunderland and North Durham Royal Society for the Blind

The Society has been offered the opportunity to raise money by helping pack customer's shopping in a major Sunderland city centre store on: Thurs Dec 3rd, Friday Dec 4th and Saturday Dec 5th No experience necessary, simply a polite and cheerful attitude and a careful approach to people's shopping. Your help will be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in helping please call the Volunteer Centre on:(0191) 5678902 On a sad note one of our longest serving volunteers Myra Smith died recently, she had been a volunteer with the service for over 20 years and was very active in the community, especially as a champion for older people and the Coalfields Area. She will be a great loss not only the service but to the many people she has visited over the years.
