Volunteer E- Newsletter - July 2010

Please find below some information below on some of the latest volunteering opportunities that are looking for your help and support.  If you wish to find out more about any of these opportunities then please get in touch with us on the contact details below.

Animal Krackers (Sunderland) has two main aims, one is raising funds for an animal rescue centre in Sunderland and the other is to help the animals of Sunderland, eg. vets bills for those needing rescuing and to provide advice and information.

They're currently recruiting for two volunteering opportunities.

The first is Volunteer Dog Walkers. The dogs at Animal Krackers benefit from being walked by a number of different people other than the staff, it is a way to socialise dogs, providing them with some human interaction.. The opportunity to be exercised away from other barking dogs can help them settle more into a routine as they wait for a new home.  Dogs also benefit from the exercise and added mental stimulation which makes for a happier dog. As a volunteer dog walker you will be responsible for keeping the dog you are walking under control and dogs must always remain on the lead. Dog walkers will also have to pick up after their dogs. Some of the dogs are received as strays so their past history is not known. Volunteers must be mindful of this at all times. A reasonable level of physical fitness is needed for this role as the dogs come in all sizes and some can be quite strong. Volunteers should have patience, understanding and confidence with dogs. As kennels are in a remote spot your own transport would be beneficial but not essential.

The second opportunity is for Animal Adoption Assistants. Volunteers would view animals needing new homes, photograph and then publicise via websites and vets etc and then to assess potential new owners. Good communication skills and experience of animal handling is needed. Volunteers need to be able to to take photographs and have web design experience and IT skills.

Streetcare gives help and care to those in need especially those who are homeless. It operates a drop in centre on two mornings each week, and provides a meal to the homeless on two Saturdays each month. They are currently looking for Drop in volunteers to assist at the drop-in in Norfolk Street, providing tea, coffee and light refreshments to the service users. Volunteers will also provide companionship to those who require it. As some of the Service Users have other underlying problems that have contributed to their homelessness, this can be a very stressful situation. Volunteers must be understanding, compassionate, be discreet and uphold service users confidentiality. They must be able to work on their own initiative as well as being a team member. Volunteers must be able to cope with the sometimes stressful environment.

They are also looking for Saturday Meals Volunteer to help serve meals to those who are homeless and in need once every 6 weeks in St Gabriel's Church or more often if the volunteer wishes. Meals are served on the first and third Saturday of the month (9.30-1pm). Duties could include food preparation, table setting and serving food, washing up, clearing away and cleaning down. Volunteers can carry out all or some of these duties

North East Disabilities Resource Centre (N.D.R.C) provides educational, recreational and leisure activities to adults who have cerebral palsy. they are currently looking for Volunteers aged 21 - 65 to help with the gardening group.

Volunteers will be working with people with physical disabilities keeping the garden neat and tidy. Volunteers interested in this role should have a keen interest in gardening and and a wish to help people with disabilities.

Groundwork North East helps people and organisations make changes in order to create better neighbourhoods, to build skills and job prospects, and to live and work in a greener way. They focus on disadvantaged communities where they can make the most difference and work towards a vision of a society of sustainable communities that are vibrant, healthy and safe, and which respect the local and global environment and where individuals and enterprise prosper.

They are currently recruiting Community Allotment volunteers to help at allotments across the area. Volunteers will be responsible for tending the plots, planting crops, harvesting and watering as well as general maintenance of the sites including building raised beds, painting and staining fencing, seating and building sheds and poly-tunnels. Volunteers interested in this role should be aged 16+. An interest and experience in gardening or growing food would be beneficial although not essential as training can be provided so total beginners and more experienced volunteers are welcome.

Rethink Sunderland Advocacy Service provide advocacy services for vulnerable adults in Sunderland, including those people with mental health needs, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory impairment and older people. The service protects the rights and interests of vulnerable adults, supports them to access the support they need and to have their say in how support is delivered to them. They endeavour to eliminate discrimination by empowering people to express their thoughts and feelings and by supporting them to voice and achieve a variety  of skills and interests. Appropriate training and support will be given for all volunteers.

They are currently recruiting volunteers to support the service and the vulnerable adults it works with by providing a number of roles that will be allocated in line with the volunteer's own interests and skills. These may include:- using the volunteer's own life skills or experience of services to support vulnerable adults to have choices and support in making their own decisions. accompanying them to access agencies and services that they would normally otherwise miss out on. Searching for services and opportunities available to vulnerable adults locally, and supporting the administration of the service and contributing to a newsletter and also promoting the service and acting as a member of an advisory and support group for the service.

All volunteers must have a commitment to enabling vulnerable adults to have their say in what happens to them. Personal experience of health or social care services is beneficial. Volunteers need self confidence and assertiveness and should have the ability to listen effectively and to share information with others. IT and presentational skills are also helpful.
